There is no clear cut answers to this question.
However, I am being called to write this out as I think I have come across the tip of the answer.
The SHORT answer to this is….
IT DEPENDS WHETHER HAVE YOU FIGURED OUT WHAT YOU WANT TO DO IN LIFE? IF YOU KNOW WHAT YOU WILL BE DOING OR WANT TO DO, GO FULL-TIME!
My opinion is based on my own experience which may not amount to much. But I think it may resonate with some of you.
As some of you may have known, I took a Diploma in Computer Engineering. Although my result was considered good by many, never did I feel satisfied. I always felt that something was missing. I didn’t quite enjoy it. I didn’t quite like it. Well, I liked the programming modules and networking modules. However, when it comes to theory modules, I felt lost and helpless.

I don’t remember feeling good about having good results. I always told myself that there is no use in having good results, if its all just on paper. I had no work experience related to what I have studied. I didn’t know what kind of job will I be getting in future. I had no interests in anything.
Like any other typical human beings, you’d dream of working with big MNCs. The same goes for me. I dreamt of working with APPLE and Microsoft. I dreamt of being a super programmer, etc. I was naive. Or perhaps most of us are naive. We are brought up in a society that stresses so much on “education”, and NOT “skills”. I think that might be the right word of putting it. My paper “results” were great, however, my “skills” were empty. I did not feel like I gained much, other than theory.
Of course, I didn’t think like that in the beginning. One thing I know, something was NOT RIGHT! So, to cut the story short, I graduated, and got a reserved a place in Compuer Scicence at Nanyang Technological University (NTU). Of course, I accepted the offer while serving my NS.
For about 2 years, while serving NS, I kept on thinking on what do I want to actually do in life. I had no answers. As my time’s getting nearer towards the end of my service, I took a drastic move, which I believe many would not dare to do it. I simply withdrew from my reserved place at NTU!
I got a job as a programmer with a local start-up, and took up a part-time degree in IT. The reason I took part-time is so that I can have enough time to think, and reconsider my decision. I must warn you in advance that PART-TIME STUDIES ARE NOT FOR THE WEAK! There were times.. where I started to question myself whether did I do the right thing? Did I choose the correct path? Why was I so dumb to withdraw from my reserved place.
Fast forward 2 years later, I finally found my answer! I now know what I want to do in life!
IT TOOK ME 4 YEARS TO FIGURE OUT WHAT I’D LIKE TO DO!
The road is clear & set now. I am glad that I found my answers without committing to anything that may stray me away from my path. As a conclusion, if you know what you’d like to do, go for full-time studies. If you don’t know or unsure, go for part-time.
Hope you have or about to find your answers soon!
